Elounda with transliterations of Elouta and Elouda is a small fishing town on the north coast of the island of Crete. It is a part of Agios Nikolaos until 201o when it belonged to Lasithi. This city is formed basically out of seven towns and one uninhabited island. Elounda is famous for its tourists attractions and is luxurious seaside.
This is an old island that can be easily accessed by ferry from Elounda. This island is uninhabited but it contains ruins from several different cultures and influences. In addition to all it also has an old leper colony situated. This is also a project of art undertaken by the government.
This ancient Doric city is filled with ruins which bear great historical significance. The town itself can be accessed by road and was first built by the Dorians in the 8th century and was named after Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis. This is also said to be the birthplace of Nearchos, Alexander’s famous admiral.
Agios Nikolaos Lake
This lake is considered to be a wonderful lake offering majestic and exceedingly beautiful sceneries day and night. The lake is said to have no bottom because of its superior depth and legend says that Athena used to swim in this lake.
Porto Elounda Golf
This is a wonderful Golf court available for guests by appointment only offering panoramic views of the azure blue waterfront. Tourists who are interested in the sport can opt this location for a calm day out in the open soaking up the Greek sun.
This is a small museum but with a vast amount of knowledge within it. The exhibits mainly focus on the different methods of growing herbs and how wool was dyed in Greece. There are descriptions of the medicinal properties of various herbs found on the island and also a poem written by Costis Hatziphotinos.
Folklore Museum of Agios Nikolaos
This was established in 1978 in collaboration with the Cultural Society of Eastern Crete. The museum is the home to a rich collection of genuine exhibits of Cretan popular art, hand woven and embroidery pieces, Byzantine icons and instruments, costumes and other items. It also contains General Ioannis Alexakis’ military arms.
Established in 1970 housed in the Museum of Herakleion, this museum is a vast collection of ancient archaeological marvels from the eras of Early Minoan, Middle Minoan and Late Minoan to Archaic and Daidalic deposits right up to the Roman and Greek times.
This monastery is one of the most historically significant monasteries of Elounda as well as Crete and it contains a bascilia dedicated to Virgin Mary and also a well at the center where holy water flows. The monastery has many valuable possessions like, the Unwithering Rose, lord Jesus of John Kornaros, and many crosses, sultan decrees, seals and revolutionary flags.
